Recreational drug use is also dangerous during pregnancy; drugs like marijuana, cocaine, and even caffeine can cause birth defects, miscarriages, premature labor, underweight babies, and stillborn births. Babies born to women who smoked cocaine during pregnancy are commonly known as ‘crack babies’ and not only face serious addiction difficulties at birth, but also can experience physical and mental problems throughout life.
It is important to note that while all drugs can be dangerous during pregnancy, the Institute of Medicine has declared that out of all abusive substances, alcohol is the drug most likely to cause neurobehavioral damage to a child.
