The Congenital Malformations Registry (CMR) of the New York State Department of Health administers a Population-Based Surveillance of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome in New York State. New York States project is aimed at reducing the number of FASD related births by eliminating alcohol consumption by women of childbearing age and pregnant women. The New York State Office of Alcoholism & Substance Abuse Services (OASAS) plans to conduct a multi-year, statewide effort to prevent Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) through: (1) increased outreach, identification and referral of at-risk pregnant women and women of childbearing years (2) training on FASD for health care professionals working with at-risk women; and (3) increased awareness by women of childbearing years about the dangers of alcohol consumption during pregnancy.
