A licensed maternity home. Prenatal program accepts adolescent girls at any stage of pregnancy. In a drug and alcohol free environment, clients receive education about prenatal care and nutrition. Also available are counseling in adoption and life choices as well as group and individual therapy and parenting education. The home receives support services from mental health therapists in the community, an adolescent outpatient chemical dependency program, the Helena Indian Alliance and other local human service organizations.

Healthy Beginnings is part of a federally-funded collaborative research project between the Salish Kootenai Confederated Tribes and the University of New Mexico Center on Alcoholism, Substance Abuse and Addictions to look at the effectiveness of a comprehensive, community-based effort to prevent drinking during pregnancy and the resulting birth defects including Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS). The Healthy Beginnings staff members are Irene Lake, Prevention Site Manager, and Rose Maestas, Prevention Case Manager. Project Services include community education about FAS prevention, information and education for women of childbearing age, and case management of women at high risk for drinking during pregnancy to help them stay substance free by accessing local services.

State program that is funded by federal dollars through a cooperative agreement with the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention. Part of a Four State FAS Consortium which includes, South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana and Minnesota. Received funding to pilot an FAS prevention intervention in four areas of the state, collect information on children diagnosed with FAS/E and is also surveying behavior risk factors among pregnant women in Montana. Supports a Statewide FAS Advisory Council that was appointed by the Governor. Funded through September 2003.
