“A number of you have spoken today that the idea of consequences is not that meaningful for youth with FASD. But the justice system is built on consequences. So we really need to train professionals in the justice system in new methods and new strategies because what I've heard today is that these youth can make progress, can make positive changes, and can really be contributing members of society.”

NOFAS Hope for Women in Recovery Summits

On June 29 and 30, 2004, NOFAS hosted a 2-day summit titled, "Hope for Women in Recovery: Understanding and Addressing Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders." The summit was sponsored by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's (SAMHSA) Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) Center for Excellence and was held in Phoenix, Ariz. It was designed to reach women who suffer from addictive disorders, as well as addiction professionals and state policymakers.

On the first day, women receiving drug and alcohol treatment were educated on the dangers of drinking during pregnancy. Presenters shared their expertise and experiences to reinforce the message that alcohol can damage the developing fetus. They also shared helpful strategies for those that are affected by FASD. Later that day, participants attended a town hall meeting and had the opportunity to speak in front of a panel of experts and policymakers about problems they have encountered with the systems that address FASD.

The second day involved agencies and representatives for the state of Arizona. Topics covered were FASD 101, living with FASD, estimated costs and the experience of FASD for the state. Overall, over 300 attended the summit and helped to develop an action plan for addressing FASD prevention and treatment for the state of Arizona.
