“I've worked with poor families and the homeless for 17 years, first in Boston and now in Washington D.C. I've worked with people, some of whom had extensive criminal records, that weren't diagnosed with fetal alcohol syndrome until well into their adult years. All of their lives they have been labeled difficult, lazy, and manipulative. I've worked with women who reacted in horror and disbelief when their child was diagnosed with FAS, saying 'But I didn't drink that much.'”

NOFAS Annual Benefit, Hill Day and Affiliate Summit Set for June 23-24

The annual NOFAS Leadership Awards Benefit honoring FASD professionals, advocates and leading public officials will be held the evening of Wednesday, June 24, in Washington, D.C. Senator Lisa Murkowski and Tom and Linda Daschle are among this year’s invited honorary hosts. Honorees will be announced in early April. Past award recipients include Ken Lyons Jones, Anne Streissguth, Ed Riley and Teressa Kellerman.

The awards benefit is the most important fundraiser of the year for NOFAS. Sponsorships and individual tickets are now available. Please contact Tom Donaldson for more details, donaldson@nofas.org.

The NOFAS Affiliate Summit will be held on Tuesday, June 23, also in Washington, D.C. Representatives of the 22 current affiliates are invited to discuss the affiliate network issue agenda, highlight current programs and activities and share resources.

The 6th Annual Hill Day activities will take place on June 23 and 24. Advocates will visit legislative offices and federal agencies to brief policymakers on FASD issues and call for increased attention and investment for primary prevention, services and other needs.
