“When he was eight, our son Dalante's second grade teacher said to us, 'I think this child has FAS.' At this point in time, we had been involved in social systems, medical systems, psychiatric systems and educational systems, and yet this was the first time that FAS had been brought up. We're hopeful to get an accurate diagnosis. He is a wonderful little boy. We fear for his future. He is extremely naïve. He is extremely sweet. He would be the ideal drug runner. He would be the ideal child to be taken advantage of and this has already happened with food fights in the cafeteria: somebody gives him a dime and promises to be his friend, so he takes the blame.”

Kathy Mitchell Briefs President Obama on FASD

May 14 - NOFAS Vice President and National Spokesperson Kathy Mitchell talked with President Barack Obama today in New Mexico about Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD). In their conversation, the President recognized the significance of FASD and agreed with Mitchell that much more needs to be done to prevent the disorder and to ensure appropriate services for individuals and families living with the effects of prenatal alcohol exposure. Both President Obama and Mitchell praised former Senator Tom Daschle's leading role in increasing attention and investment to combat alcohol-related birth defects. For the fifteenth consecutive year, Tom and Linda Daschle are co-hosting the NOFAS Leadership Awards Benefit on June 24th in Washington, D.C.
