“We know what we need to do in order to address this epidemic, and it involves some very simple things, like proper maternal and child health care, where we can make sure a pregnant woman has resources available to get the treatment and support she is going to need in order to make it through her pregnancy without drinking.”
Rep. Patrick Kennedy

NOFAS Spotlights Ira J. Chasnoff, MD

At the recent 2011 international FASD conference in Vancouver, Canada, NOFAS sat down with Dr. Ira Chasnoff to discuss a range of issues in the FASD field, as well as his new book The Mystery of Risk.

In addition to his latest book, Dr. Chasnoff offers his thoughts about community health centers, FASD-related CAPTA legislation, international adoption, and policy recommendations.

Dr. Ira Chasnoff discusses his book "The Mystery of Risk"

Drawing on cutting-edge neuroscience, medicine, and child psychology, Dr. Ira Chasnoff shows how many of the learning and behavior problems we see in children, from low IQ and poor school performance to patterns of impulsivity often diagnosed as ADHD, result from a baby's exposure to drugs and alcohol while in the womb.

The Mystery of Risk traces the history of fetal malformation back to the time of Aristotle before presenting a resounding call for preventive, integrated systems of care for pregnant women and their children.
