“I am afraid that waiting for students with FASD to fail is all too common. It is tragic to hear that school teachers and administrators who are there to help support students let these students repeatedly fail in order for them to be eligible for intervention and special services.”

NOFAS Recognizes FASD Awareness Day, September 9, 2010

NOFAS is hosting an event for its Washington Metropolitan Area FASD Parent Support Group in recognition of the September 9th FASD Awareness Day. NOFAS is also promoting the Awareness Day events sponsored by its affiliates and leading FASD advocates. Among this year's highlights are NOFAS United Kingdom's Pregnant Pause event at Victoria Station in London and the Macomb [County, Michigan] Coalition for Fetal Alcohol Resources Education and Support's (MCFARES) FASD Walk Along and Better Beverage Challange.

The MCFARES Walk Along is a gathering to remind everyone that FASD children and adults will likely need someone to walk along with them because of the challenges they would face going through life on their own. The Better Beverage Challenge is an event for pregnant women and others to sample non-alcoholic beverages.

Terresa Kellerman of FASSTAR Enterprises, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome: Support, Training, Advocacy and Resources, has developed an innovative idea for spreading the messages of FASD Awareness Day. She is asking everyone to text 10 people on September 9th with the following message:

TEXT TEN FOR FASD DAY

This message will save a baby's life!

Alcohol use during pregnancy can cause brain damage, birth defects, premature birth, and death.
