“The most important thing that I want you to understand about our journey with FASD is that even though my son David has an IQ of 111 and attends public school in a regular classroom setting even though he looks like all of the other children and scores high on the state's standard of learning tests, the disabling effects of FASD are something we can never forget. He has no ability to regulate his behavior or activity level.”

NOFAS Establishes the Dr. Erin Frey Advocacy Award and Fund

In memory of former NOFAS Program Director Dr. Erin Frey, NOFAS has established the Dr. Erin Frey Advocacy Award to annually recognize an individual who is making important contributions on behalf of others in the areas of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders, addiction, or a related field. The first award will be presented at the 2011 NOFAS Leadership Awards Reception in June in Washington, D.C.

Erin was committed to her own professional development and spiritual enrichment. This focus gave her the strength and wisdom to help others overcome their challenges and make positive changes in their lives.  She believed passionately in therapeutic rehabilitation and the principles of fellowship and recovery, and she sought to overcome the stigmatization of addiction and FASD in society. The Dr. Erin Frey Advocacy Award recipient will personify these values.

A selection committee comprised of Erin's former NOFAS colleagues, her family, and close friends has selected Rusty Walking Eagle, a counselor at Crossroads an alcohol and drug services site in Fairfax County, Virginia, as the first award recipient.

The Dr. Erin Frey Advocacy Award Fund has also been established to support the award. Proceeds will be used to allow the honoree to attend the awards ceremony and to ensure the continuation of the award. Depending on the available funds, the honoree may also receive a scholarship to sustain his or her advocacy.

All contributions are tax deductible and donors will be listed on the NOFAS website and in other organizational materials.

Condolences from colleagues and friends
