Nurse Practitioner, Leone Murphy, from The Arc of New Jersey, will present information on one of The Arc of New Jersey’s health promotion projects, Prevent, Understand, and Live with Diabetes.   Leone has presented seminars on this topic for self advocates, staff and caregivers.  She has helped to develop a Diabetes workbook and DVD — written for self-advocates and caregivers — that addresses the areas of prevention, diagnosis, symptoms, diet and treatment for individuals who have intellectual and developmental disabilities.  This diabetes booklet and a DVD (in English and Spanish) are available from The Arc of NJ at no charge.   These materials were developed with funding from the Horizon Foundation for New Jersey.

The Arctic FASD RTC is now offering FASD201 training to community professionals, students, parents and caregivers, and all other interested members of the public. All workshops take place at RADACT.

Please register by noon on the Thursday prior to the scheduled workshop. Workshops with fewer than five registrants may be subject to cancellation. On-site registrations will be accepted on a space available basis.

These workshops meet the requirements for the State of Alaska’s Department of Health and Social Services’ FASD201: Developing Successful Interventions and Supports.

All participants will receive a certificate upon completion of the workshop.

Prerequisites

Prior completion of at least one of the following is required prior to attending this workshop:

• FASD Foundations
• Online courses on FASDs offered through the UAA Department of Psychology/WICHE ICE
• Arctic FASD RTC Comprehensive FASD Workshop
• Arctic FASD RTC Train the Trainer Workshop

Learning Objectives

• Describe FASDs.
• Identify characteristics of FASDs within all life stages.
• Describe the importance of early identification and intervention.
• Describe secondary disabilities associated with FASDs.
• Design intervention strategies to help people with FASDs and their families.
• Discuss treatments and therapies available for individuals with FAS/FASDs.

The purpose of this activity is to increase nurses’ ability to effectively work with individuals who may be living with an FASD and their families, and to develop individualized intervention strategies. Criteria for successful completion of this activity include attendance at 100% of the session and active participation in group discussion. There is no identified conflict of interest for any planner or presenter involved in this educational activity.

Continuing Education Credits/Contact Hours

Continuing education (CE) credits or contact hours are available through the UAA Center for Behavioral Health Research and Services (CBHRS).

Participants will be eligible to receive four (4) continuing education (CE) credits/contact hours for the completion of the workshop. The processing fee for these four credits is $25.00.

CBHRS is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. CBHRS maintains responsibility for this program and its content. These CE credits may be accepted by several licensing boards and for other professional purposes. Please consult with your licensing board to confirm the acceptance of these credits.

This activity has been submitted to the Montana Nurses Association for approval to award contact hours. Montana Nurses Association is accredited as an approver of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

Many studies emphasize the association between FASD and significant behavioral problems in the affected child. Areas of the brain vital to the neurocognitive process of executive functioning, self-regulation, and adaptive behaviors are particularly vulnerable to the effects of prenatal alcohol exposure, which may disrupt neuronal pathways associated with arousal and behavior regulation. Unfortunately, many families, especially those living in the rural areas of the country, do not have access to behavioral management guidance. This webinar will discuss an eight-step problem-solving approach to managing behavioral problems in children with FASD, anchored in an interactive on-line behavior management system. The system has the potential for making guided interventions and behavioral management strategies available to programs serving children with FASD and families who are raising a child with FAS/ARND but who do not have ongoing access to care or trained professionals. Nevada State EUDL Coordinator Kathy Bartosz and Officer John Schutt will provide an overview of how geographic information system (GIS) mapping of outlet density and crime helped the Las Vegas PD focus their EUDL enforcement efforts in hotspot areas of the city, resulting in improved compliance by alcohol retailers from 78% to 98%; and achieved an overall reduction in crime by 29%, as well as property crime reduced by 12%.

Traffic Safety Prosecutor Jared Olson will discuss how social networking platforms can be used to develop local intelligence regarding underage drinking events and a serve as a foundation for preventative action. Webinar registrants will learn how using today’s technology, to include GIS mapping and social networking platforms, provides them a means to strategically deploy resources.

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a client-centered, evidenced-based method for engaging clients in a self-examination of the issues they face, and creation of motivation to change by exploring and resolving ambivalence. It is being used with considerable success throughout the MA inpatient and outpatient treatment and recovery system.

This one-day training will provide an overview of motivational interviewing, stages of change model and basic MI techniques. It is designed for individuals with NO prior MI training or expertise.
