The National Organization on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome invites you to its Second Annual FASD Hill Day. Please take advantage of this special opportunity to help shape laws in the making! NOFAS will arrange meetings between you and your elected representatives in both the Senate and House of Representatives on Wednesday, May 18, 2005 and fully prepare for those meetings on Tuesday May 17th, 2005. The purpose of these visits is to communicate your story and your expertise to Congress so that they take the prevention and treatment services we demand for fetal alcohol spectrum disorders seriously. Participants will receive a customized itinerary, special training on key messages and tips for effective meetings, and tailored information packets to provide to congressional offices.
Experts on grassroots advocacy will get you ready for meetings with your elected representatives in Congress. You will learn effective techniques for delivering your message on Capitol Hill. Speakers will also provide detailed briefings on NOFAS’ legislative priorities and talking points for your meetings. This program will not only prepare you for your congressional meetings but also give you skills for influencing policymaking back home.
Meetings will be scheduled for the morning and afternoon of May 18 in advance of NOFAS’ Annual Leadership Awards Benefit, held later that evening. Most of your visits with representatives will be conducted as a delegation from your local area, although we might have to combine groups depending on the final turnout. You should expect to make 3-4 visits over the span of the day, with either Senators and Representatives themselves or their key staff. Making your voice heard on Capitol Hill couldn't be easier. It's easy, and it's important if you want to shape the laws that determine who receives special education services, how people with developmental disabilities are treated in the justice system, and most importantly, whether women drink alcohol while pregnant. Issues of importance to the world of FASD — special education, prematurity prevention programs, drinking reduction programs, and funding for alcohol research and treatment — are before Congress this year, making this a great opportunity to advocate for your families and communities.
Email or fax your completed registration form to NOFAS by May 6, 2005.
