“My experience leads me to suggest that if there was one thing that I could do, I would just make sure that all physicians had training in fetal alcohol syndrome and its effects. It would alleviate a lot of frustration for a lot of families, including ours.”

NOFAS Gearing Up for its Annual Leadership Awards Benefit and FASD Hill Day

Washington, D.C. — The National Organization on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (NOFAS) will hold its annual Leadership Awards Benefit on Wednesday, May 18, 2005. Honorary Hosts Senator Tom Daschle and Linda Hall Daschle, and Honorary Chairs Senator Bill Frist, MD, Senator Chris Dodd, Senator Lisa Murkowski, and Representative Jerry Lewis will help honor leaders in the fight to prevent Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD), the leading known cause of mental retardation, birth defects, and learning disabilities.

This year's honorees are Senators Dick Durbin and Mike Enzi, Representative Steny Hoyer, Sterling B Williams, MD, and Kenneth Lyons Jones, MD.  NOFAS will also be presenting Service Awards to Michele Zieger and Larry Rosenthal, both members of the NOFAS Board of Directors.

Established in 1994, the NOFAS Leadership Award is presented annually to prominent Members of Congress, community leaders, and other outstanding individuals in recognition of their commitment and leadership in the fight to prevent alcohol-related birth defects.

Coinciding with the Benefit is the Second Annual FASD Hill Day on May 18, 2005.  Grassroots advocates from around the country, armed with the latest facts on FASD and meaningful personal stories, will have the opportunity to meet with and educate their elected representatives in the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives.  On May 17th, Hill Day participants will convene for a day of preparatory workshops focused on the latest developments in FASD and effective techniques for delivering messages on Capitol Hill.

NOFAS is the only national 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated solely to eliminating birth defects caused by alcohol consumption during pregnancy and to improving the quality of life for those affected individuals and families.
